The viruses have been suggested to be associated with adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL), large granular lymphocyte leukaemia, leukopenic chronic T-cell leukaemia and neurological disorders defined by chronic myelopathy such as tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) and HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM).
The viruses are mostly transmitted by sexual contact, from mother to child (also via breast milk), by transfusion of infected cellular blood products and by sharing contaminated needles among drug abusers. Systematic screening of blood and organ donors has started in several countries all over the world.
